  A heavy break up, followed by my 3rd redundancy… I suddenly had a lot of time. Moving from a nice house to a tiny, empty flat was crushing and weird but the sudden restriction got me feeling creative. I wasn’t feeling particularly great after a couple of rock bottom months – but I spent ages thinking about my ‘career’. I just had to do something to beef up my Radio Presenter CV which was 100% blank. That’s the dream job, so I’m just going to talk about what I love. New Music. After speaking to friends and realising they were still cranking up the same tunes they were into 15 years ago, I thought I’d put together a podcast to recommend new music. • JACBOX EPISODE 2 // NOV19
  
  Crazy really. After sharing the podcast with my friends on Facebook, I had more listeners than I expected. The positive response wasn’t just in the play count though. I was all about the messages from people I’d not heard from for years – Asking for more. I decided to create the podcast on a monthly basis, as it didn’t take long to put together and it wouldn’t feel like a chore if it was only one day a month. I pushed things a little by doubling the length of this episode and branching out a little with more electronic and alternative music. I stuck to my rule of only playing new music. Luckily for me it was a strong month for new records, so I had plenty to go at and had a lot of fun putting it together.

  It’s a thing. I’ve always gone out of my way to find new music – but now that search has expanded. What started as me sharing tunes I enjoyed, has quickly become a huge a part of my daily habits. I’m listening to new music through a third ear. A big part of me has developed into thinking of records from opinions other than my own. I’ve started to listen to more alternative pop music, actively searching for new soundtracks too. Friends have been sharing the episodes and now the podcast is for the whole internet, rather than just my friends.

  I had to record earlier in the month than usual and there were much fewer music releases at this time of year. Being away from my family at Christmas for the first time was weird too – I was an emotional wreck.
  
  This was the first time I ever felt nervous about the podcast. I was glad to be going into the new year with something I could be proud of, as 2019 was a bit of a write off for me. I was now talking about my new music podcast in job interviews, and it was being used by friends at parties to introduce me. The podcast had now become a big part of me as a person, similar to a job defining you in smalltalk. I was restricted by only playing new releases, so I started to think about how I could maybe push in different directions and reach out to new audiences. I can see things moving slowly with no budget, but I feel my work is strong and each episode deserves to be heard.

  Lockdown! Nobody could have predicted the sudden change of lifestyle as well as the need for new things to do at home. I was happy to put together my lengthiest episode to date and this month had so many incredible releases I had plenty to go at. I also got a tenners worth free advert on Facebook so I pushed this episode more than any other which resulted in my most popular podcast. I also got more messages than ever, which was a nice feeling and lead to me playing the episode back myself and enjoying it a lot!

  Feedback from the previous lengthy episode was positive! With such a massive wad of great new releases this month, I cut much less and also decided to experiment a little with electronic music by adding a mix. Most electronic tracks can be a little too long for the podcast so they never make it to the final playlist. Awesome new tracks by Nathan Fake, Jamie XX & Daedelus were always going to get played – but at the end of the podcast I also included a 45 min DJ mix of new electronic music.
  
  I figured it would be unsuitable for most listeners (as the singer/songwriter tracks I play usually get a much bigger response) but anyone could stop listening if they didn’t enjoy it. The stats were crazy though! The drop off I expected just didn’t happen and pretty much everyone played the whole thing. With the episode clocking in at over 3 hours I was very surprised. I decided to casually put a mix like this together every month. I’ve wanted an opportunity to improve my mixing so this makes perfect sense.

  This months selection is almost opposite of the June episode. Maybe it was just the hot weather, but I’ve mostly been on quite chilled guitar records for the last few weeks. I was still happy with the amount of variation I managed to squeeze in. That Catnapp track is just incredible! I was feeling generally great and relaxed after settling in with my new job at MMU and I was enjoying working from home and finding more structure to my weeks through that. Lockdown also brought the rest of the world down to my level, so I was feeling extremely comfortable and happy.

  iTunes has been the heart my music library for years. I’m extremely organised with my physical and digital music collection (mainly because I have so much, can’t see and get frustrated not being able to find something). Every month I make playlists of the tunes I might play on the podcast and rearrange and make cuts from there. For some reason this month, Apple updated the Music software in such a way that I lost all of my playlists. I don’t think I’ve ever been so frustrated through an update – it completely blew my mind!
  
  So I basically lost the playlist I put together for this month, as well as losing track of what was new this month – I had to start again. I set a deadline of the first of each month to help me actually put the work in and release each episode. I’m too much of a perfectionist generally, which is exactly why I’m so behind with the DJ mixes already and haven’t released any music of my own for almost 10 years…! I usually have a month to put this podcast together but this time I had a week and I just wasn’t in the right mood. I was up recording the episode until 5AM on the 1st. I just felt like everything went wrong for this episode!!! This was my first bad experience with the podcast, and I hope it’s the last because up until now I’ve always been proud of my work. I think this episode comes across negative in places – but that’s just me reading way too much into it I guess! The response was as warm as ever.

  Yes! I’ve peaked, surely! The music this month is just the best. I’ve never been so excited to share an episode – this is a perfect ending to the first 12 months of podcasting. A lot has changed for me in just one year and it’s great to have this catalogue of music I’ve been enjoying while going through so many changes.
  
  Tagging the artists I play in the monthly Facebook posts has also been great as I often get messages and support from them too. I’ve found nothing but love putting Jacbox together and I’m looking forward to seeing where it will take us. Thank you so much for listening!

  Happy birthday us! I’ve been feeling so reflective for the last couple of weeks. My mood couldn’t be more opposite from the first episode, and JACBOX is a big part of that shift. It’s funny how the music released controls the mood of the podcast though, and most of this months tracks are so SAD! Ha ha! I’ve noticed that more and more releases are becoming focused on the pandemic and tough times – which has a real downside when you’re playing tracks back to back! I’m certain that this episode will work better in small playback sessions rather than a long sitting. I’d like to see how listeners connect with it this month, especially with a heavier ending.
  
  I received a few voice recordings from listeners after asking what tracks they have enjoyed most over the first year. The responses were so nice I’ve decided to use them to help promote this new website over the next week too.

• JACBOX EPISODE 14 // NOV20
  
  Too much music! I remember things being much quieter this time last year. I’ve had more to play over the last few weeks than I’ve had time for. It’s the first episode I’ve felt under prepared for, which was actually pretty refreshing – But I’m sure I’ll have missed some amazing tunes this month. Plenty to go at for everybody here though, a whopping 50 tracks! I decided to go long again now that the sheer incompetence has thrown us into lockdown again… A prime moment for me to start the show with another poem.

  Ouch. That’s been the tone for my month so far. If you’ve never had a tooth abscess – Lucky you! Ha ha! I’ve been in agony and deaf in one ear. I could see my own face it was so swollen!!! So this episode is slightly late, sorry.

• JACBOX EPISODE 19 // APR21
  
  Moving onto video has been an absolute mission! Learned so much through my failed instagram live video which got cut off. It was a good feeling doing something in the moment – as I usually record each episode as voice notes on my phone and edit them on Logic.
  
  My whole process was too slow so I’ve changed it up – I now play tracks through my computer and set the input to OBS, which I record everything through. I had a nightmare with this months episode with the recorded video crashing each time I played a track. I think I pushed it too hard with an eq visualiser and video effects. I was happy with the whole audio side of it though. It felt fun to record in one take. There’s plenty of slip ups and dodgy bits but I’m hoping to improve as each episode comes out – I’ll be buzzing if I can get slick enough to feel good about live one shot takes. I might need some help with the producing though because it feels like I have way too much to concentrate on at once right now…! I had a great introduction to Adobe Rush to go over the video and put still images over each track to cover the crashed sections – but hopefully that shouldn’t happen again.
